“This is the music which became a source of inspiration to all of my works and Sync neither could avoid it. It is very high-tech, very quick and fuzzy for me in technical terms. The lights here are neither lyrical nor romantic – nor there are pastel colors- but everything is opposite to it.” Nils Christe “SYNC” Synopsis If Nils Christe preffered to call his own ballet as Sync, it is because this word has many meanings in English: It is also the abbreviated form of “synchronization” and “syncopation” (syncope in French) and when used as “to be in sync” it means “harmony, acceptance” (to be in harmony). These three mutual actions, procedures and situations which are invited during the thirty minutes performance of the drama are developed brilliantly by the Dutch choreographer.
Sync which was created in 1996 upon “Salgari” which is the work of an Italian composer named Ludovico Einaudi, upon request of Elvi Moore who was the director of Washington Ballet then, is an invitation to traveling….
There is nothing to be confused about this because “Salgari”, is a sign of reverence which is performed by Einaudi to Emilio Salgari(1) who is this Italian Jules Verne who lived the extraordinary adventures of Sandokan(2) serial up to the Malesia(3) in his childhood and youth.
Music effected Nils Christe like lightning. In harmony with the music which is repeated like masterfully selective, minimalist Americans Philip Glass and John Adams, percussion is Brazilian style, Indian music, sweet and melancholic melodies for the piano… traveling is same and simultaneous with the music.
As for the ballet, he is fed from an excellent gift which extends from the classic ballet techniques to the virtuosity with a choreographic language which is borrowed from the ethnic dances of either Africans or Indians … and also from the extraordinary amazing language.
And the scenes which caused the eternal lyricism to come to the surface…
(1) Emilio Salgari: He was born in Vérona in 1862. It is doubtless that he is the most prolific 19th century adventure novelists in Italy. He gave more than 80 novels when he was 25 and besides 150 tales and stories and innumerable scientific folk productions columns… He committed suicide in 1911. (2) This serial, which is about Hero Malaysian pirate Sandokan, is composed of 11 volumes; the first one is the Mystery of Black Jungle and the last one is Return of Yanez. (3) Up to the Maleysia. Sandokan is a Malaysian pirate and combat against the English forces for the independency of his own country.
